Unlock Your Nervous System
Somatic exercises to heal trauma, release anxiety, and activate your vagus nerve in 28 days.
Elena Vives is the author of this book and earns royalties on each copy sold, at no extra cost to you.
It's 3:17 a.m. Your heart is pounding, your jaw is clenched, and your doctor says you're "perfectly healthy." It's not in your head. It's in your nervous system.
If you've tried therapy, meditation apps and "just relax," and your body still won't calm down, this book explains why and gives you a simple, body-first way out. Talking about stress works from the top down. Unlock Your Nervous System works from the bottom up: breath, movement, sound and touch that send a direct safety signal to the part of your brain that runs your stress response.
Grounded in Polyvagal Theory and somatic therapy, and written in plain, warm language, it shows you why anxiety, tension and exhaustion aren't character flaws or a lack of willpower. They're automatic nervous system responses, and they can be changed with the right body signals.
You're not broken. You're stuck in survival mode, and your body has been waiting for you to learn its language.

What you'll learn
- How to read your internal traffic light (green, yellow, red) and know exactly what your body needs
- How to stop anxiety in under 90 seconds with the physiological sigh, the Wall Push and the dive reflex
- How to release stored tension in your jaw, neck, chest and psoas, where stress and trauma hide
- How to calm your gut-brain axis and understand the real link between anxiety, bloating and IBS
- How to "shake it off like a gazelle" with gentle tremoring and pandiculation instead of forced stretching
- How to take calm to work with invisible "office somatics" nobody will notice
- How to protect your nervous system in the digital age, and what to do on days when things go sideways
- A complete 28-day protocol with daily practices and journaling prompts
How the book is organized
Why you can't "think" your way into calm, how neuroception decides your state before your mind has a say, the posture myth and stored trauma, and the gut-brain-vagus connection.
Releasing the neck, jaw and shoulders; the chest and breath; the hips and psoas (the body's "junk drawer"); shaking and pandiculation; and the SOS Emergency Kit: invisible tools that work in under 60 seconds.
A week-by-week protocol: Safety and Grounding, Mobilization and Thaw, Release and Discharge, and Integration and Connection. Each day has a 5-to-12-minute practice and a journaling prompt. No equipment, no experience and no "no pain, no gain."
Micro-practices for your everyday routine, nervous system hygiene in the digital age, and a plan for when things go sideways, so one bad week doesn't undo your progress.
The science behind the exercises
Polyvagal Theory. Neuroscientist Stephen Porges showed that the autonomic nervous system isn't a simple on/off switch, but a hierarchy of three states that shapes your behavior, your sense of threat and your ability to connect with others.
Heart rate variability (HRV). Vagal tone is measured indirectly through HRV. Several studies show that slow breathing with a longer exhale measurably increases HRV within 5 to 10 minutes (Lehrer & Gevirtz, 2014; Zaccaro et al., 2018). That's the mechanism behind the breathing exercises in the book.
Neuroplasticity. The adult nervous system can still change. Stress response patterns built over years can be reshaped through repeated practice, which is exactly what the 28-day protocol is designed to do.
Who this book is NOT for
- It's not a meditation or mindfulness book. There's no "empty your mind." The exercises are active and physiologically targeted.
- It doesn't replace therapy or medical care. If you have a diagnosed anxiety disorder or complex trauma, the book is a valuable complement, not a substitute for professional support.
- It doesn't promise instant results. The nervous system retrains through repetition. Deeper changes take 2 to 4 weeks of regular practice.
- It's not passive reading. It works if you do the exercises. Reading it without practicing is like studying swimming without getting in the water.
What readers of the original edition say
The Spanish edition, Desbloquea tu Sistema Nervioso, is rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by readers on Amazon Spain. A few of their reviews, translated from Spanish:
"I've had anxiety and panic attacks for 30 years... If only someone had explained it to me like this before. The book is good, simple but specific. Now I understand my body."
"I'd already read other books about the nervous system. Elena has put the active part into practice and uses everyday situations to show what you feel or are about to feel. It's an instruction manual."
"It's written in a warm, easy-to-understand way. It makes you feel understood and helps you see where things come from that you thought had no reason to be."
Frequently asked questions
Who is this book for?
For anyone living with persistent anxiety, constant muscle tension, exhaustion that rest doesn't fix, or 3 a.m. wake-ups, who wants to work from the body and not only from the mind. You don't need any experience with meditation, yoga or somatic practices.
How much time does it take each day?
The 28-day protocol uses short daily practices of 5 to 12 minutes, plus optional journaling prompts. No equipment needed, and everything can be done at home.
Is it available in paperback or only as an ebook?
Both. Unlock Your Nervous System is available on Amazon as a Kindle ebook and as a paperback.
How soon will I notice a difference?
There are two levels. Immediate relief, the feeling of calm after an exercise, often shows up in the very first session. The deeper change in vagal tone, which shows up as more resilience to stress overall, usually takes 2 to 4 weeks of regular practice. That's exactly what the 28-day protocol is designed for.
Does it work for trauma and PTSD?
Somatic techniques have a solid track record in trauma work and are central to approaches like Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. With severe or complex trauma, the book works best alongside specialized therapy, because deep trauma also needs a safe therapeutic space.
Can I use it if I take anxiety medication?
Yes. Somatic practices don't interfere with medication: medication works on brain chemistry, while somatic exercises retrain your nervous system's response patterns. Many people use both. Never change or stop medication without talking to your doctor.
Is this a translation?
Yes. It's the English edition of Desbloquea tu Sistema Nervioso, the author's first book, originally published in Spanish and adapted for US readers (US units, cultural references and English-language resources).
